A Letter From Anthony Lena - Central Region Director
When I became an animal control officer more than 12 years ago I quickly realized that animal control is probably
the most misunderstood profession in the municipal workforce. When I needed answers to the many questions that
popped up daily, very few people were able to give me the correct answers. I had heard about the New Jersey
Certified Animal Control Officers Association and decided to join it as I needed to know if others were experiencing
the same thoughts and emotions I was. It turned out to be the right move for me. I learned a lot from the meetings
I attended. Besides just attending meetings I soon realized that by networking with other professionals, I had the
availability to ask the questions no one else could answer. And, I got the right answers as well. That alone was
worth the dues!
More importantly though, I've developed long lasting friendships with others that understand what I do and why I do
it. It wasn't until I was elected Central Region Director that I realized just how much this group of volunteers do
for animal control officers by demonstrating and promoting professionalism across the State. A few short years ago
this was just a job to many. Through the efforts of the New Jersey Certified Animal Control Officers Association
these jobs have become careers.
Many people ask "what is the Association going to do for me"? My question to you is, "what are YOU going to do…for
yourself, your profession, and the New Jersey Certified Animal Control Officers Association"? Join a leadership team
and make a difference in the profession you care so deeply about.
